Three Chinese or Filipino Woven Straw Hats.

Provenance: These hats are from the Cortlandt and Nancy Knowles Parker collection from Greenvale Farm Estate and Vineyard in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Major General James Parker (1854-1934) served in the 4th United States Cavalry participating in the Indian Wars of the Southwest. In May of 1886, during the Apache Wars campaign, First Lieutenant Parker led troops into Mexico and assisted in the capture of Geronimo and his band. He served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War where he earned the Medal of Honor during 1899, as well as World War I. It is likely these hats were brought back from the Philippines by General James Parker.
